Im Land der „virgin Queen“, der jungfräulichen Königin Elisabeth I., machte man sich so seine eigenen Gedanken über die Thesen der franziskanischen Scholaren, die augenscheinlich nicht der Realität entsprachen und nur dazu dienten, der Mutter Gottes den Makel der Erbsünde zu nehmen. Diese Diskrepanz fand ihren Ausdruck in vielfältiger Weise auf der Bühne, hier in einem früheren Beispiel.
„The Gospel story of the Virgin Birth, highlighting what every thinking person probably felt at some time about it“ war ein Thema der sog. Mystery Plays, die man als Manuskripte aus der Zeit um 1470 im Britischen Museum gefunden hat. Unter dem Titel „Joseph's Trouble about Mary“, vermutlich verfasst von „Pewterers and Founders, who were makers of pots and pans for domestic use“ ist folgende Passage aufschlussreich:

- Yours sir, and the King's of bliss.
- JOSEPH
- Ye, and how then?
